Staying Safe

Safe by Choice, Not by Chance

Safely and efficiently delivering energy to our customers is a source of pride for Columbia Pipeline Group. Through more than a century of operating experience and technological advancement, our companies and partners in the natural gas pipeline industry have developed one of the safest and most reliable energy transportation networks in the world.

Our company meets or exceeds the comprehensive federal pipeline safety program standards implemented by the U.S. Department of Transportation. For our employees, building on those requirements and developing an interdependent safety culture is critical to our success. Safety permeates everything that we do and all of our employees are committed to being “each other’s keeper.”  As such, we are confident that we can and will keep our neighbors safe.

We work to maintain a safe pipeline system by educating our employees and stakeholders, carefully planning construction projects, keeping our right-of-ways clear of obstructions, closely monitoring our facilities and carefully looking for problems before they become safety concerns.

CPG has trained employees who monitor the performance of all Columbia system pipelines from our Charleston, West Virginia Gas Control Center 24 hours per day. Our experienced pipeline integrity engineers oversee our continuous inspection program, which includes the use of state-of-the-art internal inspection devices called “smart pigs,” foot patrols and aerial patrols throughout our footprint.

Additionally, we are upgrading our safety practices in many ways, including:

  • Control Room Monitoring and Emergency Response: We are enhancing our ability to monitor, detect and respond to emergencies. Our improved modeling and monitoring capabilities exceed regulatory requirements and advance our response time.
  • Enhanced Pipeline Isolation Capabilities: CPG is employing a pilot program to review and upgrade valve closure technology. We are installing automatic shut-off valves and testing to improve rapid isolation methods for our complex pipe system.
  • Modernization: Through this industry-first program, CPG is replacing miles of transmission lines, upgrading compressor station equipment and expanding our ability to conduct in-line inspections and risk assessments across our system. Our safety culture and our progressive initiatives have resulted in industry awards including the American Gas Association Safety Achievement Award in worker safety for having one of the lowest injury rates in the industry. Regardless of our achievements, our employees and our leaders will always strive to raise the bar – we will continue to be safe by choice, not by chance.
